About KWAC

KWAC stands for Kids With A Cause. South African children make things and sell them here, with a grown-up alongside them the whole way and KWAC checking everything before a buyer ever sees it.

What it is for

A child who makes something and sells it learns what it costs to make, what it is worth, what happens when somebody else likes it enough to pay for it, and what it feels like to give some of that away. That is the whole idea. The shop is how it happens, not the point of it.

Every business here is run by a child with an adult accountable for it. The adult approves the price, packs the parcel and handles anything to do with a buyer. The child makes the thing and decides what it should cost, and a grown-up checks that with them rather than doing it for them.

Where the money goes

Of what you pay for an item, 70 per cent goes to the child's business, 15 per cent is set aside for the cause that child chose, and 15 per cent runs KWAC. Delivery is separate and none of it is a margin: it is what it costs to get the parcel to you.

The split is worked out on every line of every order and written down at the time, so a price change later cannot rewrite what a child earned on something they already sold.

What you will never see

You will not find any of this on KWAC, and there is nowhere on the site it could appear:

  • A child's surname, or their date of birth.
  • A photograph of a child's face. Where a child appears at all, it is as a drawing.
  • The address a parcel is posted from.
  • A way to message a child directly.

You buy from KWAC, not from a child. KWAC takes the payment, KWAC handles the delivery, and KWAC is who you deal with if anything goes wrong.
